Making the career change to become a Family & Consumer Sciences teacher is full of exciting opportunities for you. If you are coming from industry or already have a teaching credential in any subject, learn how you can take your years of experience and make an impact on students in your community.

Paths to an FCS Teaching Credential


There are two options for obtaining a teaching credential for Family & Consumer Sciences.

The Single Subject Teaching Credential requires an applicant to have a bachelor’s degree in Family & Consumer Sciences or Home Economics Education or a Family & Consumer Sciences related bachelor’s degree such as hospitality, nutrition, food science, child development, education, etc. If you already hold one of these degrees, select the “College Degree” button below to see pathway options for you.

The Designated Subject CTE Credential is the best option for professionals who do not hold a bachelor’s degree in Family & Consumer Sciences or Home Economics Education or a Family & Consumer Sciences related area. Professionals who have some postsecondary vocational training with industry work experience or a high school diploma and industry work experience are eligible to apply for this credential.
